I guess, every video is just a starting point for us. We're supposed to watch it and then go and find all needed information ourselves until we fully understand the topic. That's how we get smarter every single day, little by little.

    Hi Destin,
I was running my hand through my hair and one came loose, and since I happened to be sitting next to a candle, I figured I'd see what the flame did to it. It happened really quickly and I'm actually not sure what happened, it puffed up parts of it, and made a cracking sound. Could you do a slow motion video of a strand of hair burning? Couldn't find one anywhere on the web! (PS your channel is awesome, the tesla coil one is my favourite).

Hey D, love your show, i was wondering if you could explore why some people get bitten by mosquitos and some aren't

I'm 23 and I've never been bitten by one even though there are a lot where i live
for example i could be home with my mom, sit next to her and she'll get bitten several time while they don't even land on me

always wondered why is that, maybe you can answer the question

Hey Dustin, I know you really like flight and your videos on it are fascinating. Could you make a video on Gyro Copters and what a mum of 1 means. I think it has something to do with the rotor speed equaling the speed of the air craft. Anyway I think a Gyro copter video would fit nicely into your collection of Helicopter related videos. Thanks!

I know that making great content can be hard and time consuming, but it's not just a youtube channel that makes you smarter with educational episodes the literal name of the channel is Smarter EVERY DAY and I would just like to say episode 152 was over a year ago and I'm pretty sure there's a lot more that 15 days in a year. now don't get me wrong I love your content and this is one of my absolute favorite channels and your a great guy and I love the content, but I'm just saying a tad more often of episodes would be nice not even every day but just a little more often would be great.

I have zero social media presence, so I'm not sure how best to reach out to Destin with an idea for an episode. I'm a bass player and subscribe to another channel, Scott's Bass Lessons. Scott is a fantastic bass educator and he sometimes answers questions about getting different tones from the instrument based on where you pluck, slap, or pick the strings. As an engineer, I'm curious as to the science behind it. Why do different techniques produce different tones? I would love to see Destin and Scott team up and do a deep dive into the science of bass tone. Should be some great super slow-mo opportunities.

I have a question that has been recently taking my attention. Say you have perfect 20/20 vision, and your friend does not and has to wear glasses. The glasses artificially make the user have 20/20 vision, right? So what happens when the friend with 20/20 looks backwards through the lenses? Will they see the world as the vision impaired friend does without glasses? Or does some particular part of the glasses only work one way? I'd love to hear an answer back from anyone and I feel this is a great community to ask it in!
    Thanks,
    Kyle

Someone asserts that the Earth does not rotate (really, he does) because the air does not move continuously at 1200kph (#facepalm). When I told him that the air near a rotating sphere would move with it he dismissed it (then again, it is not surprising).
I don't have the know-how to make two concentrical spheres turn synchronously and show what happens to the air in between.
Of course, you don't need to run this experiment but it might intrigue you so there it is ;-)
    Keep up the good job.

On one of the videos you did about archery you were awed buy the ability of the archer to predict the flexing of the arrow as it flew to hit a target. I wanted to point out that although there is certainly very much skill involved in hitting an aspirin tablet, judging the arrow's flexing is not a part of the skill set involved. Something that you may notice if you re-look over the video is that the head and tail ends of the arrow are almost completely stable throughout the flight, the part of the arrow that flexes is the middle. By checking the spine weight he ensures that the arrows will not veer to the left (right for lefties) and after that its all about aim. A better demonstration of what happens to the arrow would to take that same pvc and hold it horizontally then in sharp jerks yank it down and then up, if you do this you will see that the ends stay relatively in the same location (thank you inertia). Any inconsistencies (movement in the ends) would be the arrows that the spine weight does not match the energy you are putting into the arrow and therefore set aside.

Destin, there is a Youtube channel I'm sure you are aware of called "Cody'slab" he is about to hit his 1 million subscriber mark. I think it would be cool if the two of you could team up for that video. Specifically I think if would be cool if the two of you used Liquid Nitrogen to freeze a whole .22 bullet with lead tip and attempt to fire it and recorded it on High speed footage to see if (1. the frozen powder will ignite and how it affects the muzzle velocity and (2. if the lead bullet will shatter rather than splatter! Would make for some good footage and a ton of views. But I know he would need a chronograph since I'm pretty sure he destroyed his with a homemade cannon! Lol

The bicycle with reversed steering reminds me of learning to fly my radio controlled planes and helicopters in various orientations. Nose out (or away from the pilot) is easy because right is right, pulling back causes the nose to go up relative to the pilots point of view. Flying with the nose in changes some of that and flying nose in and inverted changes it again (all relative to the pilots point of view). With practice you learn to fly competently in all orientations but there's a period where switching between orientations can be confusing and result in wrong control inputs. Eventually all are mastered. When you are starting to learn a new orientation it is helpful to apply a crutch until that orientation becomes second nature. A basic one is for keeping the aircraft level when it's headed toward you (i.e. nose in), where the crutch is to move the stick to the side where the wing dips. If the right wing dips (and it is nose in) then to keep the aircraft level move the stick to the right. With practice this will become automatic.

The kinds, or rather, the people that are invested in development and action of each individual task are almost more interesting than these topics that you are nice enough to share. You should do some on ecological modeling and the tasks/ experiments used to create such models. An easier/smaller concept would be one utilizing mapping of specific island biogeography. It would be incredibly interesting seeing what you would produce. Thank you so much for spending time on creating so many interesting videos!

Hey, I came across an interesting phenomenon and thought it'd be cool if you could do a video experimenting with the physics behind it: I got a 1/16 x 3 x 36" piece of balsa wood that I thought I needed for a project but didn't end up using. It was so light that I tried tossing it to see what would happen: it twirled rather fast along the longest axis and floated to the ground far slower than expected! If I drop it with as little spin as possible, it wavers back and forth on its way down and eventually starts spinning all on its own! Is it some variation of the Magnus Effect? What's going on?

Hey Destin,I really enjoy your channel. I love to learn and really appreciate your passion for answering the "why?" and "how?" of life.I have a question. When did you get into high speed filmmaking? Also, I have seen through the episodes the progression of high speed cameras. Could you do a quick video on the progression of your high speed cameras and possibly what makes each model different? Also, how high speed cameras work to begin with? If not, no big deal. I just thought it would be an interesting topic for a Smarter Every Day Video. Thanks and God Bless!

Hey Destin. Love the show. My son and I watch you from China. (No, not Chinese) Anyway, I had an idea and have no way to try it here in China, but think it would be a great idea for a show. I'd like to see the double-slit experiment reproduced with a shotgun. I know you like physics. I know you like guns. I know you like high speed photography. The double-slit experiment has been shown to predict the destinations of single photons, electrons, and even bucky-balls. Does it scale up to the macro? Can it predict the destinations of shot? There may be a Phd thesis or two here along with maybe pilot-wave theory revelations. Thanks, Rick

This has nothing to do with Slow motion video, and This might seem like a stupid topic, but it floors me every time...
Why doesn't the perimeter of a two dimensional shape directly correspond to the area of a two dimensional shape? Example: put a string around a 2'x2' square (4 sq ft) = 8' string, then cut that square in half and arrange one half above the other half (1'x4' = 4 sq ft) but now the perimeter measures 10' [This seems completely counter intuitive, but it's reality... what's the Science/magic behind why this happens?]

Destin and to the guys here ... I would like your opinion on a video ...

I saw this on fb ...

    https://www.facebook.com/boredpanda/videos/10154956094184252/

A guy who does miracle balancing ... seems ? ...

But when I see the last one ... which has a frame which is non moving at first ... has 3-4 balanced stones inside of it also...

The whole system still maintains balance while starts to have an accelerated turn ...

I don't see that balancing could continue to be maintained ...

Because the angular momentum for every stone is totally different ... it should go out of balance....

    What do you say ?

Question: I can understand the need to unsubscribe and re-subscribe, but I don't like being notified of new videos. I regularly look through the videos submitted by the channels that I am subscribed to. Here is the question, Does Youtube's algorithm give your channel a perk based on number of subscribers that hit the bell? I will put up with the annoying notifications if it helps you out; but if it is purely to help everyone to know when you have a new video, than I don't need the notifications to remind me. Thanks in advance for your time and I really enjoy your channel.

Here's a couple things you could look into.

    1) This might be kinda gross, but pick your ear and get a small amount of either wax (from your inner ear), or the more white substance (more from the outer part), then drop it into some water, like the bathroom sink or toilet. If it lands on the surface, it spins. What's causing this to happen?

    2) I have a laser pointer that I used to play with my cat. But, whenever I so as much as touch or hold the laser pointer, my cat comes running into the room. (Haha) Is my cat psychic?
