Construction FAILS that Wasted Time & Money

  • When we talk about a white elephant, that can refer to an actual animal. But more often the term White Elephant refers to a something that costs more to maintain that it’s probably worth. That’s the definition we’re using for this list … which contains 13 of the biggest construction projects that wasted massive amounts of time and money … Or if you prefer, 13 of the biggest white elephants in the world! Subscribe to Talltanic Watch our "Evidence That Aliens HAVE Visited Earth " video here:- Watch our "CRAZY Ideas That Actually Worked!" video here- Watch our UNBELIEVABLE Items Found After Tsunamis !" video here- #9 Ciudad Real Central Airport (Spain) Located in Castile-La Mancha, this facility was nicknamed the Don Quixote Airport after the fictional character. To an extent, this failed project was a victim of bad timing. It was conceived in the 1990s, when Spain’s economy was more robust. Money for the first private international airport in the country was easier to come by. But by the time the airport opened in 2008, the Spanish economy had essentially halted. By the time it was shut down in 2012, the airport did not have one single flight. After the $1.2 billion dollar airport was put up for auction,it received a bid of less than $12,000 from a Chinese investment firm. That offer was rejected as too low. In 2016, a local consortium paid out $62 million dollars for Don Quixote Airport. Hopefully that included some windmills to tilt at. #8 Russky Bridge (Russia) Did you know the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge is located in Vladivostok, Russia? That’s as defined by the length of its main span. Extending some 3,622 feet between suspension towers, the bridge was originally constructed for the 2012 Asia Pacific Economic Conference. Then-President of Russia Vladimir Putin approved the project at a cost exceeding $1 billion dollars. It was seen as a way to connect Vladivostok with Russky Island, where the conference was being held. The problem was that after the conference was over, so was a lot of the bridge’s relevance. It was designed to handle 50,000 vehicles each day … but Russky Island only has 5,000 residents, which has led to a severe under usage. #7 Sochi, Russia (SO-chee) No sooner than the 2014 Winter Olympics were awarded to Sochi, than the small town on Russia’s Black Sea attracted hordes of contractors and construction workers. Between them, those workers would essentially create a whole new Sochi. Their efforts resulted in the construction of nearly 50 new hotels … along with 13 train stations either new or renovated, six medical centers, five new schools, and 200 miles of new roads (which included 55 new bridges and 22 new tunnels). The bill for all that building was an estimated $51 billion dollars, the highest cost ever for hosting an Olympics Games Contrast that price tag with the cost of the larger-scale Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, which cost around $13 billion. The spike in tourism didn’t last after the Winter Olympics ended … and the gleaming white sports palaces have essentially stayed empty and silent ever since. One centerpiece building, the Bolshoy Ice Palace cost $300 million dollars …. And requires a daily budget of more than $13,000 dollars to maintain it.

They should've mentioned the 2 ghost cities in china. They started to build them and never finished. Considering they had a one child law and 2 cities just sitting there it makes you wonder how they can think china was getting over populated

Wait till HS2 gets dumped in about 10 years after spending £150 BILLION and being a total and utter failure and never completed. You'd think this country had plenty of money.........

though the Detroit people mover was initially a flop, it now serves over 2 MILLION people annually. in the last few years it's connected with other forms of transit, like the streetcar system that was recently implemented, and it now does connect to the bus system. So it's actually running smoothly now as Detroit has had massive revitalization projects in it's downtown, including the starting of Michigan's new tallest building. (912 ft tall)

For it's first 25 years or so though it was indeed a massive flop. But it's been implemented well in the last couple years and is finally getting decent use.

The people mover in Detroit is active enough that they are building a surface train that will ease some of the crowding around the beginning and end of business hours. Former abandoned buildings are being bought up to house tech start ups. Quicken Loans moved from the suburbs back to downtown. There is a state park along the waterfront, and a city park is now run by the state park people and has millions invested in it. Ford Motor Company bought the old Michigan Central Rail Station, which is usually shown as the example of urban decay. It's now had all closed off from the weather with new windows so restoration work can start. The property has 24hr. guard to protect the building and equipment. The Fox Theater was restored and now is being used for concerts, plays, and such. The office space in the building now holds the headquarters of Little Caesar's Pizza, in which the Illitch family, who own the Tigers and the Red Wings, are most responsible for the revitalization of that area. In the same area three new or near new sports stadiums. All four major sports teams are now downtown again. Roger Penske was quite responsible to get the three major car companies to donate enough modern equipped police cars and ambulances to replace the whole fleet. Every street light was working with brand new LED light fixtures. More light, less money.
So if the people mover is a waste it's because it's outdated, not unused. And if you think Detroit is still in decline, you need to look somewhere else.

I live in Juneau, Alaska. You are REALLY misinformed as far as your so-called bridge to nowhere. And Sarah Palin had a shirt referring to Nowhere, Alaska. It's a town! The bridge was to connect Admiralty Island to Juneau on the mainland which is maybe an eighth of a mile. If you're shit, at least get your information right!

Can't believe you mentioned the Pearl river bridge, a true feat of engineering, and has yet to see the economic boost thats expected, and yet you don't mention the California high speed rail, a measure i myself voted for, and if i knew what i know today would have NEVER voted for it. Measure 1A back in 2008, the review stated was for a 16 billion dollar high speed rail, from San Fran to LA, with extensions to SD, SB and Sac. to be complete by 2016, today that number has exploded to 90 billion, will go half the speed (from 2.5 hour journey time to 5) due to the rerouting into the central valley, (rather thru the coastal hill range) + the doubling of the number of stops now made to places like bakerfield, and fresno, and yes even the remote Imperial Valley. And now, today in 2019, not a single track has been laid down yet. worst of all they are just using the money to upgrade the old rail network, rather than building an all new one like we were told, and they honestly think ridership will triple because well....just because:)

    Corruption at its finest
