  • The Nobel Prize in Literature 2018 was awarded to Olga Tokarczuk "for a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life." The Nobel Prize in Literature 2019 was awarded to Peter Handke "for an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience." I was shocked to see Handke, of all people, get the prize after his years of defending one of the most brutal European leaders (and his cronies) since World War II.

Although he was supposed to get the Heinrich Heine Award, local outrage led to its withdrawal. Then there was the outcry over his receiving the International Ibsen Prize, which PEN Norway condemned and the expert on totalitarianism Bernt Hagvet described as "comparable to awarding the Immanuel Kant Prize to Goebbels."

After the small(ish) scandal of a jury rotting from nepotism and predatory behavior, we must consider a much larger scandal---an award to a writer, no matter how well he writes, who has spent a good part of his life and skill defending enemies of democracy and perpetrators of abomination.

Plenty of (non-European) writers of fiction, poems, and plays were available, writers that have written beautifully, with innovation, penetration, and high standards of humanity: Adunis and Ko Un, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o and Ama Ata Aidoo, Abdellatif Laabi and Claribel Alegría. Instead, the reactionary Handke gets international fame and immortality in a time that needs no more reactionaries.

    Atwood deserves to win.

Abiy doesn't deserve the prize. After he came to power, more than 3 million people displaced internally and thousands were killed based on their ethnicity. He is so incapable of securing the safety of Ethiopians to move around even in the capital city Addis Ababa. Shame on the international community!

This is the award that I don't get the most... the selection committee has so little diversity to it that the award seems like a recognition for contributions to Western/European literature and not a global one
