Growing Pothos Underwater

  • May 4th, 2017 A friend gives me a cutting of a Pothos plant. I trimmed it further, making 2 cuttings with 2 leaves each. Put them in cups filled with dechlorinated water. May 11th, 2017 A root grows in the first week. May 14th, 2017 The root grows longer. Notice that the root grows from a bud. The other cutting remains rootless. I trim the stem of the rootless cutting to lower the buds underwater. The cutting with a root goes to a new nursery. June 5th, 2017 In the past 3 weeks, new leaves grow on both plants. And roots grow strong on both plants. June 13th, 2017 Pothos grows very fast. I added newborn guppies to one nursery. I submerged most leaves of this plant. Here a new root and a new leaf are growing underwater. Only 1 leaf is above the water. August 11th, 2017 More leaves grow on the Pothos kept above water. The plant with 1 leaf above water grows slower. I want to check if this Pothos can grow submerged fully underwater. Cut the plant in two parts. Each part has roots. The cutting with 5 leaves goes back to the same nursery. This time, the whole plant is fully submerged underwater. August 17th, 2017 The plant I keep above the water grows very fast. I trim the newest leaf with a sprout. Let's see if this cutting will grow roots. Dip the cutting in water. August 23rd, 2017 The leaf on the last cutting got some brownish discoloration. And a new root started growing. September 9th, 2017 The plant above water has healthy leaves and well developed roots. There are many secondary roots. One leaf of the plant that grows underwater has a hole. Otherwise the plant looks healthy. Though, it did not grow noticeably. Here you can see a new root grows. November 6th, 2017 Here you can see a female guppy https://youtu.be/s7mANFMnBLQ nibbles on algae that has grown on the leaves of pothos. I cultivate algae in all my aquariums https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0l1wo--gqw&list=PLM88hGt0AfGsmAJKvbTnn6AUN4O3kMwGr Here you can see an underwater (fast growing) land moss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWWGfuozMUk&list=PLM88hGt0AfGsixNh13_DSMfDbj0Bg6qoP The Pothos on the other hand grows very slow underwater. December 4th, 2017 I cut off a wilted leaf from the plant that grows above water. The underwater plant is unchanged. March 22nd, 2018 I cut off another wilted leaf from the plant that grows above water. I made a cutting with 2 leaves and a sprout of a new leaf. The new cutting goes on top of my HD aquarium https://youtu.be/lig8FRbunA8 to grow roots. March 25th, 2018 A new leaf grows on the underwater Pothos! The Pothos grows underwater at the same slow pace as Peace lily plants - without any maintenance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xpRkks8W3U&list=PLM88hGt0AfGtmBbkZ2wVdehqfXAe5a9-L Have fun and happy plants :) Blog: http://rndmbits.blogspot.com/2018/04/growing-pothos-underwater.html More fun on my website www.fewdoit.com Views as Money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03hgIT4HTiE

Once I grew an angel wing begonia under water in my 20 gal. It had leaves coming out of the nodes already and then sent out roots. It lasted several months and sent out new leaves. It didn’t repot very well when I attempted to plant it in soil after it was in the tank. If you want to try this, the plant has silver spotted leaves on top and red tints on the bottom. The leaves are shaped similar to angel wings, hence the name. And the plants sometimes have pink flowers. Hope this helps.

i have read somewhere that there is more co2 in air than in water, so companies that sell aquarium plants grown them out of water(in extream humidity) so that the plants grow much faster and save money on co2 reactors. mabeys thats why ur underwater pothos grew much slower than the one with leaves outside of water?

In the tanks that have Pothos with leaves outside the tank and roots in the water, does the algae still grow well ?

Great video! I got lots of this plant in my aquariums and the leaves rot very fast when they hit water. I wonder how yours survived so well.

    Photos is semi aquatic plant..
It grows best to have the root/stem submerges into water and keep the leave above water, just like lucky bamboo..

It is common for us here in Indonesia to grow pothos. So I know shits I am talking about.

Are there other land plants per se, that will grow underwater and/or help clean turtle tank? I am looking for a way to create something similar to an eco system. I am currently in the process of building nesting boxes

It might be struggling because of lack of air exchange in the water. You don't have anything rippling the surface, so air isn't exchanging as fast as the plant would like. You should try again with a small water pump to give the water circulation

Many malls grow pothos and you could ask for some cuttings - these plants are regularly trimmed - I've seen 6 - 7 foot long cuttings, 2-3 feet long usual size, better than the cuttings just going into the garbage, most malls etc. don't bother composting plant cuttings. What a waste !

Hm. I got some pothos cheap from the grocery store and was excited, but now I'm not sure... It appears I have a different pothos specie, not vining type. I put a whole plant in the tank and it's doing fine so far, and also pulled out one rooted stem from the rest and put that in, roots only and no soil. It's doing okay so far as well. I guess time will tell.
